Lugar conhecido pelas belas praias e como destino turístico de tirar o fôlego, as Ilhas Maurício é o segundo país do Continente africano com o Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano mais alto. É lá que mora a jornalista Clarinne Geoffroy, fundadora da plataforma de mídia ‘Gospel Maurício’ de artistas cristãos. É a primeira plataforma do segmento no país.
O país que é conhecido historicamente como um Estado democrático, ocupa o 61° lugar na Classificação Mundial da Liberdade de Imprensa. Clarinne Geoffroy destaca os principais desafios da profissão no arquipélago. “A profissão de jornalista é um pouco polêmica. Falta de treinamento e liberdade de expressão são os problemas desta profissão. Não existe apoio suficiente para os meios de comunicação independentes e é um assunto delicado o suficiente para exercer esta profissão.”
Em 2020 um navio que saiu do Japão com destino ao Brasil encalhou em um recife da região ocasionando o vazamento de cerca de 3 mil toneladas de óleo no mar das Ilhas Maurício. Além de sofrer o impacto ambiental, dois dos mais importantes veículos de comunicação da ilha, o diário L’Express e a rádio privada Top FM, acabaram boicotados pelo governo durante a cobertura sobre o vazamento de petróleo e seus jornalistas não puderam comparecer às coletivas de imprensa sobre o assunto.

Para Clarinne, a atuação do jornalismo é muito importante para acompanhar as mudanças no mundo. “O jornalismo é usado para coletar informações que são mais acessíveis por meio de várias mídias, como jornais impressos e online. Hoje temos acesso a informações rápidas de qualquer canto do mundo. Quando você imagina que antes usávamos o telegrama para transmitir informações e hoje nos movemos a uma velocidade incrível. É também uma forma de alertar, de mobilizar rapidamente a população para questões importantes.”
Colonizada pelos franceses, o país tem sua história marcada pela escravidão. Mesmo assim, após a sua independência, em 1968, a ilha tem registado um desenvolvimento positivo. “O mercado de trabalho para jornalistas negros está mudando. Costumávamos ter apenas algumas impressoras que funcionavam no papel e hoje estamos em uma forte tendência de crescimento com impressoras online florescendo e rádios independentes privadas. Um pouco mais de liberdade de expressão e uma mudança radical para jornalistas negros que querem avançar no mundo do jornalismo. Ainda há um longo caminho a percorrer, mas está no caminho certo.”- destaca Clarinne.
A jornalista também integra a Coalizão Internacional de jornalistas Panafrican Caucus of Journalists e acredita que através da rede consiga ajudar a restaurar a imagem das Ilhas Maurício. “Com a rede Panafrican Caucus, já é um bom impulso para a divulgação de nossa informação local na mídia internacional. Também trará mais consciência sobre certos assuntos que afetam nossa sociedade atual e também restaurará a imagem de Maurício. Black Journalists Around the World: Clarinne Geoffroy on Independent Journalism in Mauritius
A place known for its beautiful beaches and as a breathtaking tourist destination, Mauritius is the second country on the African continent with the highest Human Development Index. It is there that journalist Clarinne Geoffroy lives, founder of the media platform ‘Gospel Maurício’ of Christian artists. It is the first platform in the segment in the country.

A little more freedom of speech and a sea change for black journalists who want to advance in the world of journalism. There is still a long way to go, but it is on the right path.”- highlights Clarinne.
The journalist is also part of the International Coalition of journalists Panafrican Caucus of Journalists and believes that through the network she can help restore the image of Mauritius. “With the Panafrican Caucus network, it is already a good impetus for the dissemination of our local information in the international media.
